Exploring Windsor and Essex County

Introduction

Things to do In Windsor, Essex County and Pelee Island

Summer is the perfect time to explore. Are you ready to get out of the big city? Ready to unwind on a beach or with a long casual bike ride? Maybe some wine tasting? If it rains, take in some museums or art galleries? Let us get you out of the city and down to Canada’s southernmost region – Windsor and Essex County, Ontario.

In this part of Ontario, you can stand on the southernmost tip of mainland Canada. Here, you will be further south than the northern border of California and much of Europe. Further, if beaches are your thing, in our biased opinion, you will find some of the best beaches in Canada.

As I said I may be a bit biased towards this region, I was born and raised in the area. In my youth it was known as Canada’s Sun Parlour. For me as a bike rider, the longer spring and summer and the relatively flat terrain were great training grounds.

To get to the region, you can drive if you have a car or a rental.  Note, a vehicle will be needed if you intend to get outside of Windsor.  Windsor itself has a very good transportation system.  Windsor has an international airport along with the international airport in Detroit.  VIA Rail is another option you could use and then pick up a rental at the station (Note: in this case you must book your rental in advance so that it can be at the VIA station when you arrive.)

Beaches and Parks

Places to go in and around Windsor

Windsor, Essex County, and Pelee Island are known for their picturesque beaches and natural parks. Lakeshore Park is a local favorite with a beach, walking trails, and picnic spots, while Point Pelee National Park boasts some of the best birdwatching in the world. Meanwhile, the quaint towns of Amherstburg and Leamington offer scenic waterfront views and charming town squares. Whether you’re in the mood for a family picnic or peaceful sunbathing session, there is a spot for you:

Things to do and See in Point Pelee

Point Pelee National Park is a magnificent escape into the world of nature with an abundance of tree, shrubs, and animals to marvel at.  The park is a short drive southeast from Leamington and stretches over an 11 km peninsula that extends out into Lake Erie. One of the many unique features of Point Pelee is the park’s wetlands, the largest remaining in Essex County.

Take a walk or bike around the park.  Relax on one of its several beaches. Pack a picnic lunch and commune with nature. My bias will be showing here as I worked as a naturalist at the park for a couple summers.  The park is home to many unique species of plants and birds that you won’t find elsewhere in Canada.

Finally, why not snap a pic while standing at the most southernmost point of mainland Canada!

Outdoors Activities

Physical Activity in Windsor and Essex County

As I mentioned, the flat terrain of the region lends itself to easy lower level cycling, running and walking especially for seniors. Now do not get me wrong there are some rather steep hills scattered throughout the region.  For example, to the west of Leamington and east of Ruthven there is an area known as the Ridge. Formed by retreating glaciers centuries ago, it is a great challenge for competitive cyclists but seniors may want to avoid the climb.

In addition to the beaches and parks already mentioned, the region is full of outdoor activities to enjoy.  The Detroit River is a hotspot for fishing and boating with golf enthusiasts can appreciate the area’s many award-winning golf courses. Pelee Island awaits those who want to bike or hike some of the country’s most beautiful nature reserves.

With over eight miles of paved trails, the Ganatchio Trail is perfect for a scenic bike ride. Take in the views, breathe in the fresh air, and cycle your way through wild wetlands, deep forests, and over creeks and bridges. This trail is a great way to get away from the city and enjoy some exercise and fresh air.

Al of Al Murray Travel & Photography:  From the time in my youth, when I would lay on our garage roof watching planes traverse the skies above me, I knew I wanted to see the world.

My passion grew after spending a semester of my university days in Barcelona.  I spent more time on trains and buses than I did in class.

After earning my BA from Carleton University, life got in the way. It wasn’t until my “middle age” did I start exploring the world again.  First, transversing the US and Canada to take part in tennis tournaments. Then later to complete my spectator “grand slam” of tennis.

I accomplished this while earning my certificate in photography from Toronto Metropolitan University.  I am now combining the two passions and now sharing with you my many lessons learned.
