Vancouver For Seniors - Welcome
There is an abundance of things to see in Vancouver. Let me take you on a journey to Vancouver through my experiences over the years. From my very first flight in 1967, all the way to my most recent flight in 2021, Vancouver holds a special place in my heart.
Where to Stay in Vancouver
Vancouver Hotels
When it comes to where I stay, Vancouver has its charm. I’ve had the opportunity to live and work in this city on two occasions, and there’s definitely something captivating about it. Sure, the breathtaking scenery might seem like the obvious draw, but it’s only when you actually experience it firsthand that you truly understand its impact. During my recent stays, I’ve had the pleasure of staying at two hotels facing Coal Harbour. The Fairmont Pacific Rim is a luxurious and remarkable choice, while The Pinnacle Hotel Harbourfront offers spacious rooms with stunning views of the harbour, North Shore mountains, Stanley Park, and even cruise ships and float planes. It’s safe to say that Vancouver’s offerings are unlike any other city in the world, and I find that truly exhilarating.
Side note from Al: Another hotel suggestion in a moderate price range is the Holiday Inn – Downtown. It is centrally located and withing walking distance to most points of interest and many restaurants.

Things to Do in Vancouver
Now, let’s talk about Vancouver’s West End. This vibrant area encompasses the picturesque beaches of English Bay, the enchanting Stanley Park, and the tranquil Lost Lagoon. Amidst the hotels, you’ll find a delightful blend of apartments, condos, and charming single-family homes. And the best part? The entire neighborhood is surrounded by an abundance of lush plants and captivating flowers, providing a stunning backdrop all year round.
Notes: For seniors who may be unable to walk the hills of Vancouver, try the Hop-on-Hop-off Bus to get your bearings and find the points of interest you will want to visit. Also, I really enjoyed a day trip to Whistler. It is a pleasant journey up the mountains, with time to wander about the Olympic village.

Vancouver Cuisine
When it comes to cuisine, Vancouver boasts a diverse and eclectic restaurant scene. Much like any big city, the dining landscape may evolve over time, but one thing remains constant – the thriving Asian culinary scene. From Indian delicacies to Vietnamese delights and a range of Chinese flavors, there’s something to satisfy every palate. During my last visit, I had the pleasure of trying dim sum for the first time at the renowned Pink Pearl in a relatively humble area. Don’t be fooled by the location, as this long-established gem serves up incredible food with impeccable service.
LGBTQ and Stanley Park
For those in the LGBTQ community, Davie Street is the place to be. It’s home to a variety of bars and restaurants, including The Fountainhead Pub, where you can relax and grab a bite, and The PumpJack, a welcoming space for both regulars and newcomers.
Day Trips From Vancouver
Things to See Around Vancouver
One of the advantages of Vancouver’s moderate climate is the plethora of outdoor activities available. Whether it’s a leisurely stroll along the Seawall surrounding Stanley Park, or a picturesque walk along Coal Harbour, the options are endless. If you’re up for an adventure, consider venturing a bit further to explore Grouse Mountain, Capilano Canyon, or the Cleveland Dam area, where you’ll find excellent hiking opportunities and breathtaking views.
Note: another adventure for you could be a whale watching cruise all depending on the time of year that you may visit.
Parties, Festivals and More
Throughout the year, Vancouver comes alive with numerous festivals. From the famed Fireworks contest at English Bay to the vibrant Italian Festival along Commercial Drive, and the ever-growing Pride Festival, there’s always something exciting happening.
Wrap Up
As a repeat visitor, my days in Vancouver are filled with endless exploration. I find immense joy in wandering the streets of the West End for hours, soaking in every detail. Chinatown and Gastown, although touristy, have their own charm and are worth a visit. Granville Island Market is a mecca for food enthusiasts, and Kits, with its nearby attractions, offers plenty of delightful experiences.
