At St. James Gate the lamb burger is ;my go-to pick. No matter my original intention, I 8 times out of 10 will pick it.

Where to Eat Toronto: St. James Gate

When exploring Toronto, it’s worth venturing to the west end to experience the delightful St. James Gate. Tucked in central Etobicoke near the intersection of Dundas, Bloor, and Kipling, this pub offers some of the best meals you’ll find in the area. Named after the home of Guinness beer in Ireland, you can bet this pub is lively on St. Patrick’s Day. With front and back patios, it’s an excellent spot to soak up some sun when the weather is nice.

Is the location easy to get to?

For most who think that travelling to the west-end of Toronto requires a passport, I am here to tell you it does not.

If you are a tourist, hop on the Dundas streetcar, westbound, and ride it until the last stop and Dundas West station.  Cross the platform then hop on the 40A  Dundas Bus with destination of Kipling Station.  (Don’t get on the 40B otherwise you will end up short of your destination).

The bus will meander through what is known as the Junction.  In total it is about 20 minute ride depending on the traffic.  When the bus announces the stop for “Bloor West”, this is where you will get off.  Walk back to the pub.

Don’t Want to Sightsee?

Conversely, you can just hop on the subway – Line 2 to Kipling station.  Head upstairs to the bus bays and find the aforementioned 40A bus.  It is 2 stops out of the station to get to Bloor West stop.  Hop out and walk into St. James Gate.

What's to See in Etobicoke?

While you’re here, you might want to explore some local attractions. The area boasts several parks and community centres, perfect for a leisurely stroll or a day out with family.

Explore along Dundas in the alleys and walkways the many fabulous murals depicting the history of the area.  Or visit Montgomery Inn, Canadian history buffs will know all about it.

Finally, if you are not into public transit to get to the area by a rideshare company will cost you from $25.00 to $35.00.  The price will vary depending on the time of day and on the traffic.  Given the current state of the main freeway out to the westend, I highly recommend transit.

Streetcars of today have advanced from the old train-like predecessors.

Comfortable and Inviting

The pub offers a comfortable and inviting atmosphere suitable for everyone. Whether you’re looking for a cosy corner to enjoy a quiet meal or a lively spot to catch up with friends, St. James Gate has got you covered.

Seating and Ambience

The seating is diverse, ranging from bar stools to comfortable booths. The ambience is warm and welcoming, with a décor that harks back to traditional Irish pubs. The noise level can get a bit high during peak hours, but it adds to the vibrant atmosphere.

Variety for All Ages

The menu at St. James Gate is varied and caters to both young and old. You’ll find classic pub fare alongside some unique dishes that are sure to delight your taste buds.

As for me, I fall back on their lamb burger.  I love it. But I do also love their Irish stew, their chicken wings are large and meaty.  I then every now and then order up dessert – the sticky toffee pudding.

Menu Readability for Seniors

The print on the menu is reasonably sized, making it easy for seniors to read. The menu isn’t overly complicated, ensuring you won’t be overwhelmed by choices.

Courteous and Knowledgeable

The staff at St. James Gate are courteous and knowledgeable. They excel in timing their service, ensuring you’re well taken care of without feeling rushed.

The staff to me is always a reflection of the management.  The management has taken time to ensure the staff are trained, that they enjoy what they are doing and that the customer is the number one concern.

Local Recommendations

Not only do they provide excellent service, but they also know the area well and can recommend nearby attractions. Plus, they’re sure to greet you with a smile, adding a personal touch to your dining experience.

Conclusion

Having passed by St. James Gate Pub for nearly twenty years on my way to and from work, I eventually moved in across the street and became a local denizen. I now plan a meal there at least once a month. It’s a hop and a skip for me, but if you’re in Toronto, I recommend making the trip to the west end at least once to enjoy some good old Irish pub food.

On a hot summer’s day, you might find me reading or writing on one of the pub’s patios while enjoying an adult beverage. Stop by and say hi!

Al of Al Murray Travel & Photography:  From the time in my youth, when I would lay on our garage roof watching planes traverse the skies above me, I knew I wanted to see the world.

My passion grew after spending a semester of my university days in Barcelona.  I spent more time on trains and buses than I did in class.

After earning my BA from Carleton University, life got in the way.  But I did find time to graduate again from George Brown in Fitness and Lifestyle Management and then work my way through most of a degree in Sports Administration. However I needed to find work and pay for all this education!

It wasn’t until my “middle age” did I start exploring the world again.  First, transversing the US and Canada to take part in tennis tournaments. Then later to complete my spectator “grand slam” of tennis.

I accomplished this while earning my certificate in photography from Toronto Metropolitan University.  I am now combining the two passions and now sharing with you my many lessons learned.
