Where to Stay in Montreal
After years of exploring Montreal and trying various accommodations, I recently discovered the perfect spot for a comfortable stay: the Hyatt Place in downtown Montreal. Previously known as the “Le Gouveneur” Hotel, this property has undergone a significant transformation under the Hyatt brand.
In the past, the old hotel lacked charm and desperately needed a makeover. While some rooms were decent, the overall atmosphere was tired and uninviting. However, things have changed post-COVID. The Hyatt Place Montreal Downtown is now a part of Hyatt’s mid-range hotels, offering a select service experience without room service or extravagant amenities.

Best Location to Stay in Montreal
Let’s dive into the details of this new and improved hotel. The location is fantastic, situated at the corner of St. Catharine and St. Hubert. It’s conveniently across from Jardins Gamelin park and just a block away from the central Montréal-Berri-UQAM metro station. This hub allows easy access to multiple metro lines, and the best part is that you can get from the metro to the hotel without stepping outside if needed. However, I must mention that the route might be confusing for newcomers, and there are a few steps to navigate, so be prepared if you have heavy luggage.
Now, here’s some good news: Jardins Gamelin, which used to be a slightly sketchy area, has undergone a significant transformation over the years. The relocation of the central bus terminal has made the park a safer place, with fewer people crashing in the park. You can rest assured that your stay at Hyatt Place will be enjoyable and worry-free. (But like any big city always be aware of your surroundings!).
Downtown Montreal Area Hotel
Speaking of the hotel itself, Hyatt has done an exceptional job revamping the common areas. The once gloomy atmosphere has been replaced with bright and cheerful spaces. Everything looks clean and well-maintained. On the downside, the rooms aren’t very soundproof, and I could hear noise from neighboring rooms. Additionally, as I stayed over New Year’s Eve, there were some lively celebrations in the park, which could be heard until around midnight for the first couple of nights. Overall, I’d give the non-room environment a solid A-.
Best Lodging in Montreal, Quebec
Let’s talk about the rooms, which are a definite upgrade from the old Gouveneur. They are well-lit and provide ample space for relaxation. The carpet has been replaced with laminate flooring, giving the rooms a modern touch. Other amenities include a small chaise (perfect for holding your suitcase), a Keurig coffee maker, and a spacious desk. I would rate the rooms as an A.

Where to Stay in Downtown Montreal
Looking for a photographer-friendly hotel with plenty of outlets? Look no further than the Hyatt Place in downtown Montreal! While the desk size was great for setting up gear, there were only 2 electrical outlets and USB ports, which might be frustrating for long-term shoots. However, the same configuration was available at the nightstand between beds, which helped alleviate the issue. Just be aware that the desk chair is not the most comfortable for extended periods. Overall, the hotel receives an A- rating.
When it comes to fitness facilities, the Hyatt Place is a standout. Open 24/7, it has all the equipment you need for a great workout during your stay. I was thoroughly impressed and managed to use it twice. They also have an indoor pool, although I didn’t have a chance to try it. This hotel gets an A++ rating for its fitness facilities.
Friendly Hotel in Downtown Montreal
The staff at the Hyatt Place were all awesome – friendly, helpful, and always busy. They went out of their way to offer suggestions and even helped me get a taxi when I left. The restaurant staff were also friendly but not intrusive, always greeting me with a smile and asking how I was doing. In terms of staff service, the hotel receives an A rating.
Now, let’s talk about the food. The Hyatt Place is not a full-service hotel, so breakfast comes at an extra cost. Unfortunately, the breakfast buffet was a big miss. The lack of day-to-day variation and overdone pork sausage and cardboard home fries disappointed me. If you’re looking for a better and cheaper meal, there’s a McD’s across the street. Overall, the hotel receives a C rating for its breakfast.
(A couple other breakfast recommendations: Cora’s Breakfast or Allo Mon Coco).
Senior Travel
Senior Tourism
When it comes to senior accessibility, the Hyatt Place is a winner. It’s easy to access from the train station and the refurbished lobby has no carpets to impede your roller cases. The rooms are well set up and navigating around furniture is not an issue. The washroom is good, and the shower is easily accessible. The hotel is also mobility-friendly, with no issues for anyone using a cane, crutches, or wheelchair. I highly recommend this property for seniors and those with mobility issues. It gets an A rating for senior accessibility.
Conclusion
The Hyatt Place in downtown Montreal offers great value for your money. It’s conveniently located near public transportation and easily accessible for everyone. You can explore Chinatown, the gay village, and go shopping on St. Catharine Street. The Berri-UQAM station will quickly take you to other points of interest like Mont Royal, the Olympic Stadium, and the Casino. (Also note: you are steps away from University of Quebec at Montreal campus). Although the breakfast was a miss, the fantastic fitness facility makes up for it. Plus, there are plenty of nearby restaurants to try if you’re looking for a good breakfast. Check out the Hyatt Place and see if it suits your needs. It receives an overall A rating.
