About Al Murray Travels
Travel advice for mature Canadians who want better trips, not busier trips

Welcome to Al Murray Travels.
I created this site for mature travellers who still love exploring, but no longer want rushed itineraries, bad hotel choices, long walks with no benches, or travel advice written for twenty-five-year-olds with perfect knees and unlimited energy.
Here, the goal is simple: help you plan smarter, calmer, better-paced trips across Canada and beyond.
Who this site is for
Al Murray Travels is built for:
- Mature travellers
- Solo seniors
- LGBTQ+ travellers
- Couples planning slower trips
- Families helping older parents travel well
- Canadians looking for practical travel advice
- Visitors who want real neighbourhood tips, not tourist trap noise
If you want honest travel planning with a senior-friendly lens, you are in the right place.
Why I write this travel site
I grew up in rural Southwestern Ontario, not far from Point Pelee National Park. Travel did not start for me as a luxury. It started as curiosity.
Tennis opened the door.
As a teenager, I biked long distances to play. Later, tennis took me across Canada, into the United States, and eventually around the world. I have travelled to watch and play tennis, including attending all four professional Grand Slam tournaments: the French Open, Wimbledon, the US Open, and the Australian Open.
I also spent time studying in Barcelona, travelling through Spain, visiting Paris, and taking side trips to places like Malaga and Morocco. Those trips changed how I saw cities, people, food, culture, and the value of slowing down.
Now, in my retirement years, I travel with a different eye.
I notice hotel locations. I notice bad sidewalks. I notice where the quiet cafés are. I notice that when a destination looks good online but feels exhausting in real life. I notice the little things older travellers care about, because I care about them too.
What makes this site different
A lot of travel content tells you what is popular.
I care more about what is useful.
On this site, I look at travel through a mature traveller’s lens:
- Is the hotel location practical?
- Is the neighbourhood safe and comfortable?
- Is there transit nearby?
- Are there places to sit and rest?
- Is the itinerary too rushed?
- Is the attraction worth the effort?
- Is the trip realistic for people with stiff knees, lower energy, or a slower pace?
- Is there a quieter alternative to the obvious tourist choice?
That is the difference here.
I am not trying to sell you fantasy travel. I want to help you make better decisions before you spend your money.

About Al
My name is Al Murray.
I am a photographer, travel writer, tennis lover, coffee-shop sitter, and semi-retired Canadian who still wants the next trip to feel worthwhile.
I studied Photography at Ryerson University, now Toronto Metropolitan University. Photography shaped how I see cities. Travel writing gives me a way to share what I notice.
I spent many years working in the financial industry. It was not my travel dream job, but it helped me keep travelling, keep playing tennis, and keep learning how people move through the world.
These days, I write for travellers who want practical advice from someone who understands age, pace, comfort, value, and curiosity.
I believe good travel does not need to be frantic. You do not need to see everything. You need to see the right things, at the right pace, in a way that feels good for you.
Contributor note
Al Murray Travels also includes occasional input from trusted contributors with travel experience.
One contributor is Gary Swayze, a long-time traveller and former travel industry professional. Gary brings a love of independent travel, cultural curiosity, and practical experience from years connected to airlines and travel agencies.
Contributor input helps add perspective, but the main voice and direction of this site come from Al Murray.
