Where to Stay in Montreal: Fairfield Inn

Introduction

When the city of Montreal beckons with its cultural extravagance, finding the perfect abode is a critical prelude to a truly memorable stay. For those seeking a blend of comfort, convenience, and affordability, the Fairfield Inn Downtown Montreal stands as a beacon of hospitality in the heart of the city. But is it just the next run-of-the-mill hotel experience? Join me as I uncover the minutiae of what makes this chain a slice of home in the historic streets of Montreal, making it a contender for the top spots to stay in this vibrant metropolis.

I have now stayed with Fairfield three times with the first being just after the end of the full COVID lockdown.  This is my summary of all three stays each had its high and low points. But mostly high points.

Established in 1987, Fairfield Inn is a Marriott International brand that’s been on a mission to provide consistent, comfortable lodging for travelers worldwide. Their mantra of “We give you exactly what you need” has shaped their approach to hospitality, and it’s a promise that’s been tested and lauded by countless globetrotters over the years. With a focus on simplicity, value, and a customer-centric ethic, the Fairfield Inn in Montreal remains a testament to their founding values.

Best Downtown Hotel Location in Montreal

The first order of business when seeking accommodation is location, and Fairfield Inn nails this quintessentially. Situated downtown, it’s a stone’s throw from a medley of Montreal’s illustrious offerings—be it the commercial heart of the city or the hustle of the Old Port.

Accessibility is a hallmark as well, with two metro stations in close proximity, and a myriad of bus routes crisscrossing in front of the hotel, ensuring no landmark is too far. Montreal’s main Metro station is one block north of the hotel. Also, nearby is the bus route that will take you down to Old Montreal and the port area.

Location gets an A grade

Senior Travel Note:

Berri-UQAM is one of Montreal’s fully accessible metro stations but I would recommend you inquire about your destination station.  Many of the metro stations are not as of yet fully accessible and you may end up having to climb many stairs.  As for the buses, they are accessible low rise buses.  But again check with the transit website or with the hotel concierge as there is a whole lot of construction and buses routinely get re-routed.

Pros of downtown Montreal location

The hotel’s address isn’t just about geographical convenience—it’s a practical decision for experiencing a multifaceted Montreal. From shopping enthusiasts who can bask in the retail haven that is Rue Sainte-Catherine or the upscale quarters of Golden Square Mile, to cultural aficionados who can meander to the Musée d’Art Contemporain, the hotel’s spot is a win. Also, don’t underestimate the power of having the calm of Lachine Canal just a walk away.

Cons of the downtown Montreal Hubbub

Life in the city rages on relentlessly, and with it comes the perpetual hum of urban living. For some, the noise may be a desirable accompaniment, but for those chasing tranquility, the downtown setting might seem a touch too bustling. Considering the alternative, however, that downtown vivacity is a mere tradeoff for the convenience that this area offers.

Fairfield Inn Downtown Montreal Accessibility

The accommodations industry is fast evolving to cater to the spectrum of travelers, and for seniors or those with mobility concerns, the Fairfield Inn has extended an unwavering welcome. Accessible rooms, elevator services, and an overall layout that’s designed with mobility in mind, ensures a hassle-free experience for all patrons. Traveling should be a joy unfettered by logistical challenges, and the message here is clear—Fairfield Inn ensures that everyone can partake in Montreal’s delights.

Of note here is not to expect a spectacular view.  You are nestled amongst the University of Quebec Montreal (UQAM) and your view will basically be the buildings around you.  That said there is a roof top terrace that I have never made it to because it has been cold, rainy or snowy each time I was there.

My overall rating for the accessibility is A.

If the heart of any hotel is its rooms, Fairfield Inn’s beats strong with its commitment to space and comfort. The rooms are thoughtfully designed, with ample square footage to stretch out after a day’s odyssey. Find solace in the pristine bathroom, and revel in the natural light that cascades in, rendering each room a sanctuary amidst the urban sprawl.

Overall room comfort is A-

The devil is in the details, and a hotel room’s functionality can spell the difference between a good stay and a great one. Here, you’ll find numerous electrical outlets to power your devices, enough to leave no soldier behind. The lighting is not just an afterthought—it’s a nuanced interplay of mood and efficiency. The work desk is more than just a slab of wood—it’s a command center, a place to map out the day’s conquests and tide over the professional urgency that travel sometimes demands.

Overall from a working perspective the room gets an A

Whether you need to get some cardio in or just spend some time stretching and de-stressing, Fairfield Inn has a standard gym hotel. It isn’t a high end gym but it will keep you going for a few days.

The weights are standard dumbells up to 30 lbs.  There is a universal weight machine but if you are a tall like me it could be problematic.  There are treadmills and eliptical cardio machines to get your heart going. There is no pool.

Overall I give the gym a B.

Refueling isn’t just about sustenance—it’s about savoring. The hotel’s dining options, characterized by a homely buffet breakfast. The selection for the buffet breakfast was an elevated standard.

You have all the normal choices of cereals, fruit, make your own waffles etc. On the hot side they rotated the proteins daily bacon, sausage etc. The eggs were not always just scrambled.  One day there were mini omelettes, egg benedict etc.

All said, breakfast was a great way to kick off the day!

As for other meals, just check with the desk staff.  They will be ready with a few recommendations within walking distance for everyone.  Or do like I do when I am exhausted after a day of wondering about, use one of the food delivery services.

The breakfast at Fairfield gets a B+.

A staff is the heartbeat of any hospitality nexus, and at Fairfield Inn, it’s a team that resonates with the spirit of service. Professional, proactively friendly, and perpetually helpful, the personnel is a testament to the hotel’s commitment to the guest experience. They don’t just check you in; they check in with you, ensuring that your stay is not just comfortable, but personalized to your needs.

They had tons of great suggestions on restaurants, non-standard tourist attractions and more.

On my rating scale they get an A-.

Conclusion

In the pantheon of Montreal’s lodging options, where does Fairfield Inn stand? For the senior traveller seeking accessibility without compromising on location, for the tourist looking to taste every flavour of the city’s diversity, and for the business voyager demanding efficiency and comfort—Fairfield Inn Downtown Montreal is more than just an option; it’s a proposition that’s hard to resist. With all the conveniences and comforts that make any sojourn a success, this could very well be the starting point to your Montreal tale. And with that, Fairfield Inn earns high marks in our evaluation, cementing itself as a top recommendation for where to stay in Montreal.

Fairfield Inn Downtown Montreal gets one of my highest ratings of A overall.

Al of Al Murray Travel & Photography:  From the time in my youth, when I would lay on our garage roof watching planes traverse the skies above me, I knew I wanted to see the world.

My passion grew after spending a semester of my university days in Barcelona.  I spent more time on trains and buses than I did in class.

After earning my BA from Carleton University, life got in the way.  But I did find time to graduate again from George Brown in Fitness and Lifestyle Management and then work my way through most of a degree in Sports Administration. However I needed to find work and pay for all this education!

It wasn’t until my “middle age” did I start exploring the world again.  First, transversing the US and Canada to take part in tennis tournaments. Then later to complete my spectator “grand slam” of tennis.

I accomplished this while earning my certificate in photography from Toronto Metropolitan University.  I am now combining the two passions and now sharing with you my many lessons learned.
